Position Description: Position Description
  • Walking dogs and cleaning cat cages Monday and Wednesday night at approximately 8 p.m. This will be carried out by both Work Study students together.
  • Each Work Study student will have work either Tuesday or Thursday afternoon, cleaning and restocking the surgical prep room and surgery room for 3rd year Surgical Exercises.
  • Cleaning surgical instruments and preparing them for sterilization.
  • Cleaning cages, runs, floors and equipment after the animals have been discharged.
  • Carrying animals in crates outside at discharge.
  • Walking dogs outside to void and cleaning up after them.
The applicant will need to provide proof of protective rabies titre.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience handling and caring for dogs and cats, such as assisting in a veterinary clinic.
  • Senior undergraduate student.
  • Appreciation of confidentiality issues.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Scheduling Details:
  • 6-15 hours per week
  • Both students-every Monday and Wednesday night approximately 8 p.m.
  • Either Tuesday and Thursday, 2 - 5 p.m.
  • 9 weeks from October 10 to November 30 and 12 weeks from January 8 to April 4, not including reading week in February
Supervision & Coaching Structure: Staff will be training the student. Once training is complete, Monday and Wednesday, staff will be available by phone to offer assistance. Tuesday and Thursday, staff will be available in the vicinity to offer formative feedback of the tasks.
Anticipated Student Learning:
  • Scientific Knowledge: understanding of cleaning and contamination, infection control. Develop and understanding of medical monitoring equipment management. Animal care.
  • Skills: communication, planning and organizing of tasks depending on the variation of animals, students and stage of clean up.
  • Attitude: responsibility of performing the jobs accurately.
